Out on the Mudflats

If they don’t come to you, sometimes you have to go to them. I wanted to get some eye-level views of scarlet ibises in the mudflats at low tide. Unfortunately, none of them came very close to my blind at the edge of the mangrove forest. The solution was to make a mobile blind that I could move across the mudflats. I took a large, truck tyre inner tube, fixed a small platform on top of it, and erected a small camouflage tent trimmed with some branches that was big enough to hide my camera and my upper body. My legs remained outside the blind, and I pushed it across the mudflats, up to my knees in mud. My idea was to appear like a small bush and move slowly enough that the ibises would pay no attention to me (see Notes on Photography, this page).

It worked, and I went out among the ibises feeding and bathing in pools on the mudflats and got the shot you see here. My inner-tube blind would float and keep my camera out of the water if the tide came up before I retreated. That didn’t end up being necessary, as I got some shots and was able to get back to my boat which was waiting at the edge of the mudflats, before the tide rose.
